Ellefson chuckled. "A rogue who lies and steals for fun - not even I am that focused on preaching. No, I just believe that I would be able to provide far more oversight and discipline that any teacher could. My duties at the church, as sacred as they are to me, are often...tedious. Shepherding a wild child will at least give my mind something to be concerned with." He paused for a moment before adding a more personal reason. "In my advancing age I have found guiding and interacting with children of all ages to be uplifting. It gives me hope for the future; a reminder of why I do what I do."

"Oh, okay," Koji said meekly.  "I thought if the net bag held like a moss ball, the mushrooms would grow between the netting."  He fell silent, eyes lowered.

~~

The Headmaster sighed then shrugged.  "I'll see what strings I can pull to get her sent to you.  Why not?  It's not like we haven't exhausted all of our other options."

Collin nodded, "I understand, but do you see how that could get heavy pretty quickly? We would not be able to carry as many moss balls as we could bags of cut mushrooms..."

"Have someone escort her to the chapel when it is necessary. I'll be waiting." Ellefson started to get out of the chair and then sat back down again. "Did you have anything else you need to ask?"

"Yes, Dad," Koji agreed meekly, falling silent as he focused on his job.  Stupid!  Stupid!  Stupid!  Of course that wouldn't work.  It was a dumb idea.  He shouldn't have bothered.  He only had dumb ideas.  He wasn't smart enough to have good ideas.

~~

"Yes, there is another.  He is an intelligent little fellow, but highly sensitive.  One wrong word sends him into a panic and hiding," the Headmaster sighed.  "He is determined to go to a regular school, and his parents have given him all the help to be had, including a therapy animal, but that only helps so far."

A panicky boy with a therapy animal - that sounded familiar. The poor boy needed faith, not a fluffy cat, Ellefson thought. "An animal will never help him overcome these fears," he shot out. "People frighten him; people must alleviate those fears. Have you given him one on one training, away from other children? Perhaps letting him grow a rapport with a single person might lessen the symptoms." He had witnessed Perry open up a bit to him, and that was only a few minutes.

"I'm afraid one on one training is a bit difficult to manage," Headmaster Winston sighed.  "We have done our best, but... Perhaps if I were to pair him to an older studant... hmm..."  His mind drifted to the older Samson girl, Keita.  Yes, she should do well.  "Thank you, Ellefson, you have been most helpful," the Headmaster said warmly as he stood.  "Let me walk you out the back way.  That takes us through the kitchen!"  He winked at the Proclaimer.  Ellefson would not be leaving empty-handed.  Outside, the evening bells signifying the shift to Sleep Cycle began chiming.  People should start closing up shops and going home.  As close to a curfew as you could get without being a curfew.

~~

"Yes, sir," Koji said quietly, jumping as the bells began to toll.  "Oh... Day is over, Dad.  Should we finish this row?"

"You are most welcome, Headmaster. I look forward to meeting the girl, and please keep me updated with the progress of the boy." Ellefson stood to follow the Headmaster.

"Of course!"  The Headmaster abandoned the Proclaimer at the kitchen, leaving the servants to take care of him.  The servants gave him a basket loaded with the nicest of meats, fungi, cheeses, and bread.

~~

"Yes, sir."  Koji carried his load to the silo where the mushrooms were stored then went to help his mother as he was told.

Ellefson accepted the basket with a smile, thinking inside of how quickly the headmaster had ran from him. He'd become used to this treatment from high ranking officials in public, but for someone to do it in their own home was a new low. Oh well, the food looked wonderful, he thought. As soon as the basket was in his hands his cane was tossed on top and he was ushered out the door at a startling speed. The streets were half abandoned, with most of the people rushing frantically to get home for dinner or bed. He gripped his cane tightly and headed back for the church.

He arrived a while later and was greeted by a few of the Flames waiting in the sanctuary for him. They had become used to his bringing back food from his appointments. He sat down in a pew with them and divvied out the foodstuffs. The Proclaimer had always viewed those under him as his children, to protect and nurture. After their makeshift meal they headed to their quarters under the sanctuary. Ellefson stepped outside then main door and lit a small flame at the top of the steps. The Beacon was always to remain lighted as a protection for the Church. The doors were never locked; they trusted in the reminder (or rather threat) of the fire to guard safe the door against thieves. It wasn't very effective, but it still always burned through the Sleep Cycle. Now that his last duty was done, he headed back to his private chambers behind the sanctuary to rest and meditate until the Day Cycle.

Koji did as his mother said, helping her set up for dinner.  He calmed, relaxing into the soothing rhythm of daily life.  He liked routine.  It made him feel safe.  Dinner, then hygiene, then bedtime with a bit of downtime in his room if he wasn't too tired.  Maybe he would draw before sleep.

(Wrapping up the day, about to start a new one.  Do you want one more post, VC?)

Kata awoke with the bells. Contrary to what most people thought, the best time to steal was during the final rush before the sleep cycle was completely dominant. The mass of people kept her shielded from the eyes of enforcement officers. She made her way back to the market and was greeted by the wonderful sight of merchants packing up and shoppers rushing for last minute dinner supplies. She headed down one of the main streets, bumping into people every now and then to snatch a coin (I assume they'd use metal money given that metal would be more plentiful underground) from an open hand. People were so rushed no one noticed until she was far gone. At the end of the street she bought a handful of mushrooms and a jar of water. She went back to her small hideout, munching on the mushrooms along the way. By the time she returned, the rush was over and the streets were nearly empty. Time to sleep. Again. She sighed, thinking about home, wondering if this freedom was worth it. Grimacing from memories this pondering brought up, she decided yet again that it was worth it. At least she was safe here. With that last thought, she pulled the blanket over her head and went off to sleep.

Re: Pangaea Play

Post by Jiminy on Sat Sep 16, 2017 3:35 pm

The next day was a half day in school before the weekend.  Everyone, students and teachers alike, loved half days, and yet also hated them.  For only being a couple of hours in school, they invariably turned into the hardest hours of the entire week where everything that could go wrong did go wrong.  For example, Koji accidentally knocked over the trophy case, destroying the case and breaking a couple of trophies as well as scratching up most of the others.  Perry had a complete melt down in class and had to be taken into another room to calm down.  Steven and Laura both got caught in what appeared to be a homework cheating ring, and although they were proven innocent, they had to stay behind a half hour writing lines.
Today, was not a good day.

Headmaster Winston sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose as he walked through the halls of his school.  School would let out in five minutes.  He needed to find and speak to Keita Samson before she was lost in the sea of students.  Finding her classroom, he waited patiently next to the door for her to come out when the teacher dismissed them.

Keita tapped her foot impatiently, 'come on clock...' she whimpered inside her head, 'you can do it...five more minutes..." she chewed on her pencil and tried to look like she was still paying attention when really she was thinking about food... the moment the bell rang she jumped up and got in line to leave the class, she noticed the headmaster standing outside and looked at him curiously, wondering what he was doing lurking around

As per usual, Kata sat in the very back of class. The teachers used to make her sit in the front, but they quickly grew tired of having pebbles thrown at them every time they turned around. Eventually they gave up, and the spot at the back of every classroom became permanently reserved for her. She looked up at the clock. Five minutes, she thought. She could probably make it. When her teacher turned around to write on the board she dashed out the door and ran through the halls. As long as no teachers saw her she'd get out without after school detention, and all the teachers were still busy teaching. All her hopes for a scot-free escape were dashed, however, when she ran directly into the headmaster waiting outside a classroom. Damn it, she thought, what is he doing here?

The Headmaster's hands instinctively closed around the arms of the child running headlong into him.  He looked down and smiled calmly when he saw who it was.  "Ah, Kata!  I had hoped to run into you, though I had not thought it would be literal.  Why don't you stay here with me while I wait for another student I need to speak to?"  He allowed her to move to the side, his hand remaining Firmly on her shoulder to avoid any more early dismissals from class.

Keita walked out of the classroom after the bell rang and the hoard of students had sifted through the door. She saw the headmaster with a solid grip on Kata's arm. Or course...she was the trouble maker...Keita wondered what she had done now to have the headmaster lying in wait for her..

Kata stood as still as a stone, shuddering inside from the headmaster's touch. Five fewer minutes in class weren't worth this. They waited in silence for whatever the headmaster was waiting for. When the bell went off she jumped slightly. The stream of students coming out the door snickered as they saw the school troublemaker in the hands of the headmaster.

"Keita," Headmaster Winston called as the girl drew near.  "Walk with us, please.  This way."  He turned and started walking without waiting for a response, heading toward the empty room where Perry waited, not that either of his current charges would know.  As they walked, the Headmaster caught the attention of one of the school's private security force.  "This is the one we spoke of.  Please ensure she arrives safely."  Now addressing Kata directly, he said, "I wanted to make certain there were no issues in your journey to your after-school project.  And yes, before you protest, you must go there every day after class until we are both satisfied.  One or two hours an evening.  If you fail to go, we shall have to discuss further disciplinary action... with the People's United Protective Service.  I would suggest you go willingly and quietly.  It will be over faster."  He handed Keita over to the officer to be escorted away then indicated for Keita to follow him into the room.
